Why I Love the Katadyn BeFree (and When I Don’t Use It)
The Katadyn BeFree water filter is one of my go-to pieces of gear for day hikes, trail runs, and short backpacking trips. It’s lightweight, easy to use, and super convenient when you're moving fast and want to stay hydrated without a lot of fuss.
What I Love About It:
One of my favorite things about the BeFree filter is that it comes with its own soft bladder, which packs down small and takes up very little space when not in use—perfect for stuffing into a running vest or pack pocket. The bladder is easy to fill from creeks, streams, ponds, or lakes. Thanks to its high flow rate (up to 2 liters per minute), it’s effortless to drink directly from the filter or quickly squeeze water into another bottle. It makes grabbing a drink at a water source fast and hassle-free.
Where It Falls Short
As much as I love this filter for short trips, it’s not my top pick for long-distance thru-hikes. Over time, the flow rate tends to drop off, and unlike filters like the Sawyer Squeeze or Platypus QuickDraw, the BeFree doesn’t have a true backflushing system to fully clean it. Instead, you swish or shake it in clean water to remove debris—which is easy, but not super effective. In my experience, on trails like the PCT or CDT, I’ve had to replace the BeFree more often than other filters.
Final Thoughts
The BeFree is excellent for quick adventures and fastpacking trips where weight and speed matter. Just keep in mind it may not be the most durable choice for long-haul hikes with less-than-ideal water sources.
I'm working on a full water filter comparison post soon—stay tuned.
